Prebiotics are substances that preferentially favor the growth and dominance within the GI tract of the beneficial components of the microflora, such as Lactobacilli and Bifodobacteria.
Pharmax prebiotics contain fructooligosaccharides (FOS), and resistant starch, the most well known and well proven prebiotics. FOS and resistant starch are non-digestible plan carbohydrates that pass undigested through the small intestine and are then fermented in the colon. Here, they selectively promote the growth of some species of indigenous microflora, especially Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. They therefore help to produce a beneficial microflora in the GI tract and maintain the integrity of the mucosal barrier. This is assisted by the inclusion of the specific HLC LAB4 2 billion bacteria per 10 gram dose.
